Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170611115
Event: 11/25/1992
Employee falls from roof and is burned by hot tar

At about 3:15 p.m. on November 25, 1992, Employee #1, a 31-year-old roofer, spilled a bucket of hot tar that he was carrying on a roof. He slipped on the tar, slid down the roof, and fell about 8 feet to the ground. The bucket of hot tar fell with him and its contents burned his face, neck, right arm, and right leg. Coworkers at the site called 911 and the fire department and paramedics arrived, administered first aid, and transported the employee to a helicopter pad about a mile away. A waiting helicopter transported Employee #1 to a local burn center. His injuries included third-degree burns (requiring skin grafts) to the right arm and right ankle and second-degree burns to the face, neck, left arm, left ankle, and buttocks.
