Employee Injures Leg and Back When Struck by Tree

On April 22, 2004, Employee #1 was working in the national forest near California Hot Springs for a contractor to the U.S. Forest Service who clears underbrush and small trees. He was using a chain saw to cut a small tree about 15 in. in diameter, that had a snag leaning against it. When he cut the supporting tree down, the snag fell and hit him and pinned him down, fracturing his right leg and injuring his back. Employee #1's coworkers cut up the snag to remove from him. They, then, helped put him in the work van to be taken to Sierra View Hospital in Porterville. Employee #1 was hospitalized for treatment. Employee #1 had taken no precautions to stabilize the snag so it would not fall.
