Employee injured when struck by wood in abdomen

At approximately 8:40 a.m. on March 25, 1993, Employee #1, of Ethan Allen Inc., Fine Arts Division, was operating a Whitney #177 table saw in the mill department. He was performing a ripping operation, making a 25 degree bevel cut, with the grain, along the edge of a piece of alder that measured 17 in. by 22 in. by 1 1/4 in. After the employee cut all but 3 to 4 in. along the edge, the piece of wood moved away from the fence and kicked back from the saw blade. The wood struck Employee #1 on the left side of his abdomen. He was hospitalized.
