Employee injured while arc welding on un-purged steel drum

At approximately 9:40 a.m. on June 2, 2001, Employee #1, a transmission technician, was attempting to remove the top of a steel drum with an electric arc welder. The 55 gallon drum had not been purged or cleaned prior to attempting to remove the drum top and an explosion occurred. Employee #1 was struck by flying pieces and hospitalized with multiple facial fractures.
