Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201112364
Event: 02/07/2000
Employee injured when pinned by garbage truck door

On February 7, 2000, Employee #1, a swamper for Blue Barrel Disposable, was behind the company truck at a recycling center just after the truck had dumped a load of refuse. He was cleaning the bottom of the door sill so that the hydraulically operated bin door could close when the truck driver, unaware that Employee #1 was still behind the truck, closed the bin door on him. Employee #1 became trapped under the door, fracturing his right arm and sustaining abdominal trauma. A coworker saw him pinned against the truck's body and yelled to the driver to open the door. Employee #1 was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital for emergency treatment.
