Event: 08/29/1994

Employee injured when struck by falling pipe

Employee #1 was in a 17 ft to 20 ft trench installing 10 in. by 13 ft (130 lb) sections of ABS sewer pipe. A section was being lowered by boom crane hook with two common nylon web harnesses at opposite ends of the pipe. Because this section had to go under a cross pipe, Employee #1 got under the suspended load and pushed it up in order to lower the opposite end. The harness released and he dropped the pipe. The falling pipe glanced off Employee #1's hard hat, ear, and shoulder and knocked him to the ground. He had been unprepared for the additional weight. Employee #1 was taken by emergency vehicle to the hospital, where he was observed and later released.
