Employee's fingers amputated when caught in steel rollers

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on December 20, 1994, Employee #1, of California Steel Industries, was rethreading a portion of strip steel through a set of bridle rolls in the galvanizing production line of a steel mill. The rolls were being run in the reverse of the production mode due to a break or fracture of the coiled steel that was being processed. During the course of rethreading, Employee #1's left hand became caught in the pinch point between the two large steel rollers. Two of his fingers were amputated and he was hospitalized for nine days. The employer is being cited for a serious violation of T8CCR 4187(a) because the inrunning nip point between the two large steel rollers was not guarded.
