Employee injured when struck by falling column

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on May 12, 1994, Employee #1 was attaching a choker sling to a 6 ft 2 in. steel column that was to be placed in a vertical position. The column was made from 8 in. by 8 in. seamless tubing and weighed approximately 785 lb. A 5-ton crane from Big John's Crane Service hoisted the column about 45 degrees to the ground. Employee #1 had turned to walk to the mounting pad when the sling that had been attached to lift the beam apparently slipped. Employee #1 was in the path of the falling column and was struck and pinned to the ground. He sustained a fracture of the leg and was hospitalized.
