Employee's hand crushed by forklift

Employee #1 was assigned by W.T. Billard Main to field service a Raymond reach forklift, model 20, at Abbott Labs. He was checking the lift function of the forklift by lifting a lever with his right hand. The scissor assembly was in the first stage of lifting when Employee #1 noticed some writing on the overhead metal plate. He reached with his left hand to rub dirt from the writing on the plate when the assembly hit the second stage and the plates started to lift upwards. His left hand was caught in a pinch point and crushed. A witness heard him yell and took him to the supervisor and paramedics were called. He was transported to the hospital for a four-day stay.
