Event: 08/21/1993
Employee injured when hand caught in conveyor

Employee #1, a maintenance mechanic for Commercial Enameling Co., Huntington Park, CA, was cleaning sand out of the conveyors on a slinger machine at the end of his shift. The slinger machine is a large articulated conveyor system used by the employer to place sand over a large area. The sand is used in casting iron sinks. The employer had an established method for cleaning out the sand that includes turning off all power to the slinger machine and locking out the power at the motor controller. Employee #1 opened the guard on a section of the job belt of the slinger machine while it was still running and attempted to clean it. His left hand was caught between the belt and a roller, lacerating three fingers.
