Investigation Summary
At approximately 11:30 p.m. on May 29, 2001, Employee #1 and coworker #1 had just walked out of the loading dock just north of door Number 1 at a brewing company. The employees were talking to one another and passed in front of the truck driven by coworker #1. They saw a yard goat with its lights on and parked a little in front of, and to the right of the truck driven by coworker #1. Employee #1 and coworker #1 finished their conversation. Coworker #1 turned to open the door of his semi-truck when he heard Employee #1 yell. Coworker #1 yelled at Coworker #2 to stop the truck. Coworker #2 had to pull his truck forward to unpin the legs of Employee #1. Coworker #2 said he had just dropped a trailer in door Number 4 and was about to pick up a trailer in door Number 2 when the accident occurred. Coworker #2 said he did not see Employee #1 or coworker #1 prior to backing up. Coworker #2 said he was using his left mirror so he could see the lane line marking on the ground. Coworker #2 said he had backed up approximately 6 ft when he heard yelling and pulled forward. Coworker #2 said he got out of his truck and called dispatch who then summoned emergency medical services. Coworker #2 had been driving semi trucks that delivered to the brewing company for 16 years. Employee #1 had been driving semi trucks for 20 years. Employee #1 was transported to the hospital where he remained for 6 days while being treated for a broken right ankle that required nine screws and skin grafts for the area inside his right leg.
