Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 875310
Event: 07/20/1993
Employee's index finger amputated by saw blade

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 20, 1993, Employee #1 was cutting wood skids (3/4 inch thick by 2 inches wide by 30 inches long) with a Makita miter saw blade (model #244520E). He had just completed a cut when the wood raised up toward the saw. When he pushed up the plastic guard to reach and catch the piece of wood, his finger made contact with the revolving saw blade. The blade was winding down, free spinning, and it amputated his right index finger below the second joint. (The same finger had been amputated at the first joint 10 years earlier.) Employee #1 was transported by paramedics to Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, where he was treated and released.
