Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170613491
Event: 12/28/1993
Employee severely burned in fall into spilled tar

On December 28, 1993, in Sacramento, CA, Employee #1, of Bonacci Roofing, was pushing a HiBoy drum of hot tar (400 degrees Fahrenheit) across the roof when he ran into a vent pipe. The drum tipped forward and the hot tar in the drum surged forward. Employee #1, who was trying to keep the drum from overturning, was thrown over the top of the drum and into the spilled hot tar. Employee #1 landed face first with his hand out in front of him. He was heavily coated with the hot tar and was severely burned. First aid was applied at the scene by a paramedic squad. Employee #1 was then transported by Life Flight to UC Medical Center in Sacramento, with 3rd-degree burns on his face, arms, and stomach.
