FALL - STRUCK BY FALLING TIMBER

An employee was working in an elevated work area (a flume). She was to plumb and finish securing vertical sills to the flume area, which was being repaired. The 11-foot-long sills measured 8 inches by 10 inches. Five sills were toed using two 60-d nails. One of the sills fell over and struck the other four temporarily installed sills. A domino-effect caused the remaining sills to topple. The employee was struck by the first timber and, in trying to avoid being hit by the others, fell 13 feet, 2 inches to the ground. She was transported by helicopter to a medical center, where she was hospitalized with a fracture to the left forehead area.
