Employee injured when struck in eye by flying object

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on February 5, 1997, Employee #1, a ranch foreman, was using a cold 7 in. long chisel to pry open a rusted clamp from a broken bolt on an agricultural ripper unit. After several unsuccessful attempts using a couple of smaller hammers, he decided to use a sledgehammer. He swung the hammer and hit the chisel hard. It popped out, kicked back, and struck Employee #1 in the left eye. He was hospitalized.
