Investigation Summary

Event: 05/23/1994
Employee dies days after being struck by rotten log

On May 23, 1994, Employee #1, of Clover Logging Co. Inc., was cleaning up a logged site in Downeville, CA. He was part of a lopping crew that had started that day, cutting slash and trash down to ground level. Employee #1 was working in an area between a skid trail and logging road, where there were several rotten culled logs. He kicked and pushed one culled log to determine if it was stable. It appeared to be, so he stood on the log, which rolled and knocked him off balance and down the hill. While trying to regain his balance, he stumbled to the top edge of the logging road embankment where his foot caught a protruding root, which caused him to dive head first 8 to 10 ft to the road below. After he landed, the rotten log, which was following close behind him, landed on top of him, causing serious injuries. The culled log was so rotten that it exploded on impact. Following the accident, the Employee #1 was transported by pickup truck to another logging site, from which he was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA. He died there on June 6, 1994.
