Investigation Summary

Employee #1, a TV cameraman, and a reporter had just finished filming a story on a Department of Forestry prison crew that was clearing brush before the upcoming fire season. Employee #1 was carrying the TV camera on his shoulder, which elevated his center of gravity. As they were walking down a slope to return to their truck, Employee #1 slipped, caught his right foot, felt his leg break, and fell on his right buttock. He broke both bones of his lower right leg, which required extensive surgery. Earlier, a path had been cleared by the prison crew, which had cut down weeds with weed-eaters. Employee #1 was wearing rubber-soled tennis shoes, which were standard for his job.
