Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170361539
Event: 12/20/1994
Employee hospitalized for back pain

At 3:00 p.m. on December 20, 1994, Employee #1 was drawing blood from a patient in the critical care wing. He was unassisted and no witnesses observed his blood drawing procedure. He knelt down alongside a patient to draw blood, and when he returned to a standing position he noticed increasing lower back pain. He walked to the nearest nurses' station and asked for emergency assistance. He was transported to the emergency ward in a wheelchair and was examined and admitted to the hospital. He was then referred to a physiatrist for pain management evaluation. Employee #1 was released from the hospital on December 23, 1994, but was put on disability where he remained on February 16, 1995. Employee #1 has a history of back injuries and recurring back problems. Investigation revealed that the employer was not at fault and has excellent IIPP that includes back safety training.
