Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170716286
Event: 09/13/1993
Employee's fingers amputated by radial arm saw

Employee #1 was using a radial arm saw to cut an aluminum C-hanger into a smaller angle bracket using a radial arm saw. He was using his left hand to stabilize the metal against the cutting guide and his right hand to pull the saw through the metal. When the saw blade hit the metal, the metal jumped over the guide and was drawn into the saw. Because the saw was moving so fast, Employee #1's left hand, which was still holding the material, was also dragged into the saw. Three fingers were amputated and Employee #1 was hospitalized.
