Employee's hands injured when caught between belt and roller

At about 8:15 a.m. on May 31, 1994, Employee #1 was working alone in the soils mixing plant cleaning soil from the support rollers on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts, powered by hydraulic motors, were moving the soil mixes around the site. Employee #1 was using a shovel as a scraper to clean the rollers. As he cleaned one roller on its exposed in-running side, the shovel was caught between the roller and the moving belt. Both of Employee #1's hands were pulled into the pinch point and seriously injured. He was hospitalized for extensive treatment.
