Investigation Summary
Employee #1 is a general contractor who was remodeling buildings. He was ripping a 2 foot by 4 foot piece of lumber with a portable circular Skill saw. The saw jammed and jumped, then struck Employee #1 on his left hand, amputating his index finger at the top joint and cutting his middle finger. Although ripping a hand-held piece of lumber with a hand-held saw that doesn't have a provision for a spreader can be unsafe, there is nothing in the orders prohibiting the practice.
