Event: 08/16/1999

Employee killed when struck by vehicle

On August 16, 1999, Employee #1 was directing vehicles at a landfill when Employee #2 driving his refuse truck approached him. Employee #2 made a partial turn with his vehicle and started to backup it up to the disposal site. As Employee #2 drove the truck in reverse, he made visual contact with Employee #1 in his right rear view mirror, who was approximately 25-30 yards away. He then looked over to the left rear view mirror and back to the right side mirrors and did not observe Employee #1. He continued to slow back up the vehicle to the tipping area and offloaded his commercial trash. Then he drove forward to remove the remainder of the trash. After offloading, he exited the truck and found that he had struck Employee #1 with the vehicle. Employee #1 died from massive injuries received from the collision with the truck.
