Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202312534
Event: 05/02/2000
Employee injured in fall from roof

At 12:54 p. m. on May 2, 2000, Employee #1 was assisting a second employee, the lead journeyman carpenter, by performing two tasks: bringing up pieces of plywood via a ladder to the rooftop for use by the second employee; and by holding the plywood vent screens in place while the second employee nailed them in permanently. Employee #1 originally had been assigned by the employer to do "pickup and cleanup" work. However, when the employer left the worksite momentarily, the lead journeyman carpenter requested or ordered him to "give a hand". This "request" by the lead journeyman carpenter therefore placed Employee #1 in a work capacity where appropriate fall protective gear was required. However, he was not issued any type of fall arrest protective equipment whatsoever. It was in this work position that Employee #1 lost his balance while standing on the roof leading edge and fell sixteen feet to the earth. Employee #1 sustained a compound fracture of the right leg and was hospitalized.
