OFFICER SHOT IN EYE DURING ARMED TRAINING

Employee #1 was a police officer participating in a tactical training exercise designed to teach officers how to search for armed suspects. Paintball guns and protective goggles/eyewear were issued, and rules of engagement were briefed. The exercise was being conducted at night in an area of heavy vegetation and woods. Having engaged another participant in a firefight, the Employee #1 believed the exercise was over and removed his safety glasses. A third participant fired two paint ball shots at Employee #1; not realizing Employee #1 had removed his safety glasses. One shot struck Employee #1 in his right eye. Employee #1 was hospitalized. Employee #1's eye was damaged severely, resulting in its loss.
