Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202315693
Event: 11/22/2005
Employee's Finger Is Caught in Skid Steer and Is Amputated

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on November 22, 2005, Employee #1 was working as a laborer for a company that did concrete work. His employer was performing soil stabilization at a highway construction project. He was folding up a 10 foot by 10 foot plastic tarpaulin into the bucket of a Caterpillar Model Number 242B skid steer, when the skid steer's operator raised the bucket without warning. Employee #1's gloved right hand was resting on top of the bucket, and this movement crushed the middle finger on his right hand between the bucket and the frame of the skid steer. When Employee #1 pulled out his finger, the fingertip was amputated. He was transported via company vehicle to a hospital, where his fingertip was reattached. He was not hospitalized.
