Employee Injures Arm And Hand In Labeling Machine

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on June 4, 2004, an employee was working on a wine bottling labeling machine. He had been having problems with the Krones Labeler, Model Number 24158. The labels were getting stuck to the gripper. At about 1:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., a label got stuck to the gripper and the employee reached in over the machine's guard to remove it and his right hand and forearm were caught in the spinning griper and caught between it and stationary parts of the labeler. The employee was standing at the right side label hopper at the time and sustained a broken thumb at two places and a severe laceration of his forearm. The labeller was not stopped and disconnected prior to the employee reaching in. The employee was hospitalized and treated for fractures and lacerations.
