Investigation Summary
At 1:45 p.m. on December 31, 2002, Employee #1 and a coworker were at the worksite, a large new house under construction. The two employees, who are carpenters, were in the garage, a detached structure, and were cutting wood in order to construct tables. The coworker was cutting legs from 2-inch by 4-inch lumber on a chop saw. Employee #1 was sawing grooves into a 2-inch by 4-inch piece of lumber. He was using the handle of his hammer as a push stick. The saw blade was 0.75-inches above the tabletop. Employee #1 was engaged in pushing the last of a piece through when his hammer slipped, and his hand was pulled into the blade, cutting off his left little finger, and severing the tendon on his ring finger. Employee #1 was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Attempts to reattach the finger failed, and in addition to the loss of his finger, Employee #1 had 50% less grip strength in the affected hand.
