Investigation Summary
On February 18, 1995, Employee #1 was using the permanent stairs of a single family home to access the second floor. He was almost to the top when the stairs collapsed. He fell approximately 7 ft and landed on the treads, cracking his ribs. He was transported by ambulance to Calvert Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. The stairs, consisting of 13 risers, had been installed at the end of the previous day by Employee #1 and a coworker. The stairs had been used several times by the employees before the accident. According to the coworker, the stairs were nailed into a 2 in. by 6 in. by 40 in. piece of pressure-treated wood. The nails had been pulled from their place when the bottom of the stairs was raised to place the 48 in. by 42 in. landing.
