Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170128987
Event: 09/10/1991
Employee killed when struck by falling limb

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on September 10, 1991, Employee #1, of SJ's Cutting, was felling a noble fir approximately 36 in. diameter at breast height. There were no witnesses to the accident, but physical evidence indicates that the employee was struck on the head by a limb weighing in excess of 100 lb, approximately 12 ft long, and over 6 in. in diameter at the large end. Apparently the limb was lodged in the overhead branches. As the tree began to fall the limb became dislodged and fell straight to the ground, striking the employee and causing massive head injuries. One of the company's employees found the employee lying next to the stump and under the limb at approximately 3:00 p.m. Emergency services were called and Employee #1 was pronounced dead at the scene.
