Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 675611
Event: 03/23/1992
Employee killed by falling snag

At approximately 11:35 a.m. on March 23, 1992, Employee #1 was working as a safety spotter for a snag cutter. The two-man crew was cutting snags in a unit that was going to be burned; they had cut nineteen snags that morning. The normal procedure was to check each snag for pitch rings, sound wood, and lean, and to establish an escape route. These procedures were followed, but when the back cut was started, the side of a snag blew out, causing it to fall sideways. Employee #1 ran from behind a second growth fir tree directly into the path of the 33 ft snag, which struck him in the head and back. He was killed.
