Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170243455
Event: 06/23/1995
Employee dies of cardiac stenosis

Employee #1 visited the nurse for a sore throat and asked for medication. Her vital signs were all normal except for a very loud heart murmur. The nurse would not give her anything and told her to contact the attending physician for recommended medication. Employee #1 then went to another nurse to get a light duty assignment; she had been on light duty since February 1995 due to bilateral shoulder tendonitis. The nurse gave her an assignment at North campus but did NOT give her medication. (During the initial fatality phone call it was indicated that this might have occurred.) Employee #1 then drove to North campus and collapsed one step inside the double security doors. A security officer found her and called 911 and campus MERT. Four campus MERT responders gave Employee #1 oxygen and CPR for 45 minutes until an ambulance arrived. Paramedics attempted an IV, but Employee #1 was nonresponsive. The coroner's report stated cardiac stenosis; her aortic valve gave way, causing instant death.
