Investigation Summary
On May 31, 1997, Employee #1, age 19, and Employee #2, age 20, both maintenance workers for Sports State Park, entered a juvenile fishing pond to free a duck that had become tangled in fishing line. Employee #1 went underwater and failed to resurface. Employee #2 attempted to help Employee #1 and he too got into trouble. He was helped from the pond by bystanders and taken by ambulance to the hospital. The Yakima County Search and Rescue team removed Employee #1's body from the pond; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
