Employee's thumb is cut off at joint by Skilsaw

Employee #1 was cutting a small board, 1 1/2 in. by 1 1/4 in. by 8 in. long, with a Skilsaw to square the board. He was holding up the blade guard by the guard retractor handle with his left hand. His hand slipped off the retractor handle, over the front of the saw, and in front of the saw blade. The saw moved over his hand and cut his left thumb about halfway through at the first knuckle. A doctor reattached his thumb and the employee has regained its use.
