Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170126700
Event: 12/11/1991
Employee run over and killed by backing truck

A group of five employees finished sweeping a concrete bridge deck on a highway. Employee #1 was standing next to the curb on the bridge when the other employees walked away to get their trucks. A coworker reached his truck first, got in, and checked the rear view mirrors. He saw Employee #1 standing next to the curb. The coworker then backed his truck down the traffic lane, which was approximately 10 feet in from the curb. He picked up another employee, who was walking from the far end of the bridge back to his truck, which was about 1000 feet away from the bridge. The coworker had backed approximately 100 ft when he felt a bump. He stopped and saw Employee #1 lying on the roadway in front of his truck. The other workers continued to walk away from the coworker's truck and did not see the accident.
