Investigation Summary
At approximately 6:30 a.m. an employee arriving for work noticed an odor and contacted a gas company, which came on site to sample for carbon monoxide. At approximately 7:30 a.m. the company was evacuated. Carbon monoxide from a natural gas furnace with a defective flue had accumulated overnight in the building. Those employees who showed up for work waited in the building entrance for approximately 30 to 45 minutes before being sent away. The building was aired out after the furnace was fixed. Employees were allowed to return to work at approximately 12:30 p.m. that day. Employees were told to go to the hospitals of their choice to be examined if they wished. Employees #1 through #27 sought medical attention that day. Employees #1 through #10 were hospitalized.
