Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170210728
Event: 11/05/1993
ELECTRIC SHOCK - DIRECT CONTACT WITH ENERGIZED PARTS

A journeyman electrician was installing a bus drop cable into an existing panelboard supplying electric power to a press. He opened the main disconnect so that the door could be opened. He warned his apprentice that the disconnect only deenergized the bottom of the panelboard and that the upper portion would still be energized. The electrician drilled a hole in the top of the panelboard while the apprentice held a piece of cardboard over three 480-volt lugs to keep debris from falling onto them. The electrician inserted the new cable into the newly made hole. As he was installing a lock nut on the cable bushing, his right hand contacted one or more of the energized lugs. The electrician was electrocuted.
