Investigation Nr: 170705222
Event: 07/08/1996
Employee killed when crushed by falling bale of hay

Employee #1, a 67-year-old farm laborer, was walking along a truck bed after two bales of hay had been stacked two high and two across the bed. Both bales fell off the truck, and the top bale landed partially on him. The employer, who was loading the hay with a tractor, removed the 1,800 lb bale from Employee #1 and immediately called 911. Employee #1 died from an aortic transection and blunt cardiac injury approximately nine hours after the accident. According to family, friends, and the employer, he had farmed all of his life.
