Employee injured when caught between forklift and guard

Employee #1, of H. Gale Kyle, Inc., San Luis Obispo, CA, was using a forklift to put a pallet on a truck to hold down a cover. He lifted the pallet up but was unable to get it off the forks. He climbed on the forklift and had positioned himself between the mast upright and the overhead guard when his foot hit the lever that tilts the mast. The mast tilted back toward the overhead guard, pinning Employee #1's pelvis against the overhead guard. A coworker released him, taking the pressure off his pelvis. Employee #1 sustained no fractures, but he was hospitalized for 3 days.
