Employee falls from unguarded section of grating

On July 23, 1994, Employee #1, of Miller Brewing Company, and a coworker were performing night/weekend cleaning procedures in a two-person work station, a grated-floor platform elevated to a height of 42 inches between the bottle conveyors. They were washing debris in different directions. When the coworker removed a section of the grating and realized that the hose she was using was too short, she left the area to get a longer hose. While she was gone, Employee #1 returned to the platform and fell through the opening in the grating. She sustained a possible fractured 5th rib and contusions to the chest and abdomen. She was transported to Queen of the Valley Hospital, treated, and released.
