Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170177158
Event: 09/24/1990
Employee killed in 55 ft stunt jump

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on September 24, 1990, Employee #1, a professional stuntman, was attempting a stunt fall at Westward Beach in Malibu, CA, near lifeguard tower #1. The 55 ft fall from a beach cliff onto an 18 ft by 24 ft by 9 ft airbag was to simulate an actor being pushed off the cliff. Employee #1 landed on the cliff-side edge of the airbag instead of its center, slid off the bag, and fell onto the rocks at the base of the cliff. An onsite emergency medical technician and beach lifeguards administered emergency care before Employee #1 was evacuated by helicopter to Westlake Medical Center Hospital. He underwent surgery on his chest, but died later that same day. The airbag was commercially manufactured, and its 24 ft length was positioned at right angles to the base of the cliff.
