Employee suffers concussion when struck by clod of soil

Employee #1, a work crew foreman, entered a subway station excavation to examine a recent intrusion of water adjacent to a vertical, 6 to 7 ft high excavation face. Within moments of his arrival, a large, approximately 2 cubic ft cohesive clod of soil fell from the top edge of the vertical face and struck Employee #1 on top of his hard hat. He was rendered unconscious for a short, but unspecified, period of time. He sustained a concussion and traumatic shock to the skeletal and muscular systems, and was hospitalized.
