Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170615306
Event: 03/07/1994
Two employees injured when one falls from extension ladder

At approximately 11:00 hours on March 7, 1994, Employee #1 was working for a company that was constructing a 35,000 sq ft Control Atmosphere building. He was standing on a 40 ft extension ladder, drilling a hole in a pre-fabricated wall with a rotor hammer, preparing to move a wall brace. The ladder slid from under him and he fell 20 ft, sustaining a broken wrist and contusions to his left leg and shoulder. He was taken to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital for treatment. When he began to fall, he dropped the rotor hammer, which subsequently struck Employee #2 on his hip. Employee #2's injury did not require hospitalization. The investigation revealed that the ladder that Employee #1 was using did not have rubber feet. Additionally, the floor was wet from rain that had fallen the night before.
