Employee hospitalized after falling into digester

At or about 3:45 p.m. on February 28, 1991, Employee #1, as part of a maintenance operation, was monitoring gas tech readings on top of digester #6 during flush down procedures. As Employee #1 was pulling the gas tech's hose out of the digester, he stepped into an open drainage area that surrounds the top of the digester roof. He lost his balance and fell onto a section of chained guardrailing that was only 3 ft 1 in. high and had no 42 in. top rail. As he fell onto the chains, they broke and Employee #1 fell into the digester, landing on his feet. Employee #1 was transported to Harbor General Hospital for observation and treatment and was later transferred to Charter Suburban Hospital in Paramount, where he was admitted.
