Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170190581
Event: 11/30/1990
Employee's fingers amputated in crosscut saw

At approximately 9:15 a.m. on November 30, 1990, Employee #1, age 20, was working at the rear of an 8 in. Rayco crosscut saw. The saw operator was standing in front, pushing through 9 in. panels that were cut into 7 1/4 in. wide pieces. At the same time, Employee #1's job was to pick up the pieces as they were cut. He was reaching for a board when he stretched too far and his hand contacted the blade. His right middle and ring fingers were amputated to the first joint. Employee #1 had been doing a similar job for about 10 months. Safety Order #4302, class B, was not mandated, and no violations were found. The employer installed a light guarding device to prevent similar accidents.
