Employee's finger amputated between steel product and press

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on October 25, 1990, Employee #1 was adjusting the position of a sling holding a hot, heavy cast steel product known as 5057. His gloved right hand was on the product, and as it swung around the sling, his right hand became caught between the product and the frame of the 3,000-ton forging press. Employee #1's finger was amputated. The employer was cited for a serious violation of T8CCR 3273(l) for failing to guard the press. Violations of VIG 3202 (a)(1) and 3C03 (a)(2) were also found and cited. The safety orders for the forging press point of operation were found to be inappropriate.
