Investigation Summary
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on August 27, 1992, Employee #1 was cutting downward on a piece of narrow plywood for a large retaining wall with a Skil saw. He was improperly holding and securing the plywood and the Skil saw. The saw kicked back while his fingers were in line with the saw cut. Employee #1 sustained a skin cut to the palm side of his little and middle fingers, and bone chips under the ring finger by the 2nd joint, for which he was hospitalized and released the same day. Employee #1 has about 6 months experience on the job, and about 10 years as a carpenter. There was no malfunction of the equipment, and no violations was found of the employer's safety regulations or rules. The employer was found in violation of 8CCR 3203(a)(7), and a serious citation issued with penalty.
