Employee's finger tip amputated by wood splitter

At about 2:00 p.m. on November 27, 1991, Employee #1, of Tom Rogers Firewood, was operating a wood splitter machine splitting a piece of eucalyptus wood about 2 ft in diameter and 2 ft high, which had cracks on its side. The employee had his hand on the side of the wood and when the splitter started to cut through the wood, a crack closed, catching the tip of his finger. The splitter amputated the tip of his right forefinger. He was transported by the paramedics to Irvine Medical Center for treatment. The splitter is similar to a press brake; its power is derived from a diesel engine which drives the hydraulic pump. The unit is actuated by a lever which requires constant pressure by one hand; the splitter would stop when the lever was released. The size of the wood does not require the operator's hand to be placed in the point of operation. The blade has to travel only halfway through the wood to split it. The operator was trained by the employer and was qualified to operate the splitter. A serious violation was cited for failure to guard the point of operation.
