Investigation Summary
At around 10:15 a.m. on July 23, 1993, employees of NBP smelled burnt plastic. Shortly thereafter, they began feeling ill, experiencing symptoms such as nausea, headaches, and dizziness. The employer responded by calling Upland Fire Department and AQMD. Upon arrival by the paramedics, 15 employees were examined and Employees #1 through #6 were taken to San Antonio Community Hospital where they were examined and released several hours later. Neither AQMD or the fire department were able to determine the source of the malodorous smell. The fire department suggested that the location was several miles upstream, not next door as presumably suggested by the employer.
