Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170170336
Event: 04/09/1992
Employee's index finger amputated by radial arm saw

Employee #1 was cross cutting pieces of 2 by 6 in. redwood on a radial arm saw. The wood and the cotton gloves that Employee #1 was wearing were wet. While pulling the saw through a cut, Employee #1's gloved hand, which was holding the stock against the fence, slipped and went into the saw. Suffering a finger amputation, Employee #1 was hospitalized. Normally stock is pushed against the fence and a slip would not have caused the hand to go into the saw. Because of a motorcycle accident, Employee #1's left arm had restricted movement. This restricted movement, in combination with the wet wood and gloves, may have contributed to the hand going into the saw.
