At approximately 10:00 a.m. on February 12, 1998, Employee #1, of Golden State Metals, Inc., was splitting apart a compressed bale when the material in the bale fell against his left leg, fracturing it. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, CA, where he was admitted for treatment.
